Expression Through Materials

Children have been given the opportunity to use a range of materials and mediums during their creative journey in Spring term. This helps  instill the confidence to experiment and explore their own ideas.

Watercolour Painting - Nursery

As a part of their work on ‘Art Wednesday’,  Nursery were inspired by the work of Annabel Fairfax. Children experimented with watercolour paints to recreate their own flowers in her style. This image shows the consideration children have given to the application of the paint to the page. Using light strokes to create a delicate flower and stronger strokes to create bold flowers.

Oil Pastels - Year 1

Year 1 used oil pastels and collage to create these flowers in the style of artist Eric Carle. Children first considered colour and pattern to create their own papers. They then carefully used stencils to cut the bold shapes out of their handmade papers and collaged them together to create these striking images!

Exploring Value and Texture - Year 3

Children in year 3 were introduced to different grades of pencil. They were given the opportunity to explore which grades they enjoyed using and then used these to explore tone and texture. This work shows the child forming their own opinion about the pencil grades and their application of these to create textures and experiment with ways to create tone. These newly learn skills were then applied to their own observational drawings.

Printmaking and Stampwork - Year 6

Children in Year 6 looked at the work of Enid Marx, a textile designer. They analysed the different prints she made, including the designs for some of the tube trains on the TfL network. They used these as inspiration to design their own motifs using fineliner and turn these motifs into printed patterns using a tiled effect. Finally, sponge was used to create a 3D stamp which could be used with paint to create a repeated pattern in the style of Enid Marx textiles.
