Go-Go-Gadget

James Wolfe pupils have designed and made high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users. They have self selected resources considering the purpose of the product and improved their design through analysis and evaluation.

Cool Card Creations - Nursery

Apple Tree Nursery children made Arctic animals as part of their Arctic topic. They learnt where the Arctic is located on the world map and read stories about Arctic animals. They decided how to construct their animals and lay out their features based on the animals they had seen in their books. They had a range of resources to choose from (card, scissors, paper plates, glue and paint) which they self selected with support.

Family Gadgets - Year 2

Year 2 took part in a Parental Engagement Workshop to make gadgets! They designed their gadgets, considering both the tools and materials they would need to make it. When making their gadget, they had a range of resources to choose from (newspaper, card, plastic bottles, rope, tin foil, bottle lids, scissors, sellotape and glue) which they were able to self select. They created a multitude of gadgets, all designed for different purposes.

Save Our Soles - Year 4

Year 4 designed and made sandals as part of their Romans topic. They created prototypes (using their initial designs) and used these to check sizing. After feedback from their peers, they adapted their designs and made their final sandals using materials chosen for purpose: some designs had added cushioning and some had non-slip cork soles. The sandals designed for the Roman soldiers were created with metal studs and the sandals designed for the empress of Rome had delicate embroidery.

Repeating Enid Marx - Year 6

Year 6 designed repeat patterns ready to print onto fabric as part of their World War Two topic. They learnt about the war designer Enid Marx and discussed the colours and patterns used in her designs, considering why these choices were made. As she designed fabrics for London Transport, they ensured both the symbols and colours of their designs were fit for purpose, using darker colours and simple repeats. They were able to independently select the best tools to create their designs.
