Designing and making

The photographs celebrate our strong progress in developing our knowledge in all subject areas. The thread in DT this term is to celebrate the links we make across our curriculum. This thread is important as the practical nature of Design and Technology lessons provide new learning experiences to further support understanding for the wider curriculum.

Toot, tooooot!

In Reception the children have been learning about Transport.  They have made London red buses for their cross curricular DT learning.  The buses as you can see in the photos were made from recycled materials.  The children practiced using scissors, and looked at different materials and ways to join them. When designing their buses the children considered what shapes and colours would be best.

The Great Fire of London

The children in Year 2 have been designing and creating Tudor style houses out of recycled materials.  This is  to support their learning in English and history as their topic was the Great Fire of London.  Before creating their designs the children were looking at the features of Tudor houses and how they could create similar features using the materials they had available to them.

Shadow Puppets

In Year 3, the children were designing shadow puppets with moving parts.  These puppets were then used to perform a playscript the children had written in English.  Again making this learning cross curricular as it supported the learning in English. The children were also learning the topic light in science.  As part of this investigation they were looking at shadows and how we can change shadows by changing the light source or the position of the light source.  We used this information during our performances.

William Morris designs

6 enjoyed considering the ‘purpose and audience’ of a product by creating recipes for their own nutrient bar for an athlete. The nutrient bar needed to contain the necessary ingredients an athlete would need, as well as being tasty. They designed eye-catching packaging to maximize impact  in the nutrient bar consumer market. This term, Year 6 have studied textile design from the 1930s, celebrating the work of Enid Marx who was best known for her industrial textile designs for the London Transport Board and the Utility furniture Scheme. The children have also been busy  building models of  WW2 Bomb shelters using a range of recycled materials and considering the important features of shelters and their role in domestic society during the Blitz.
