The sweet sound of music

Take a look at the exploration of music across the school this term.

Appreciation of songs, rhythm and rhyme

Children in Reception have been showing an appreciation for nursery rhymes and songs throughout their everyday learning. Each week the children have been practicing a different rhyme and learning the songs by heart and they have enjoyed expressing their feelings about different songs. Children have begun to increasingly match the pitch and follow the melody of songs, rhymes and stories and show an appreciation for repeating melodies.

Pitch and rhythm

Children in Year 2 have been learning about and experimenting with pitch and rhythm. They started by creating repeating rhythms using unpitched body percussion. They discussed the different sounds they could make with their bodies and how each sound was different. They then experimented with pitch and followed a repeating melody using glockenspiels.

Compositions

This is a piece of artwork to go alongside our set work we have been studying in Year 5. Children have learnt about the history of Modest Mussorgsky and the storyline of Night On The Bare Mountain. Children have listened and appraised the piece, learnt different motifs, created compositions, structured their ideas into a piece of music and performed as an ensemble. In addition to this, children created a rap and performed the rap to a backing track while learning and applying musical language appropriate to the piece.

Playing in time as an ensemble

Year 6 have been learning the language of music through learning the recorder. Children have been learning about the correct playing posture and how to hold the recorder. In addition to this, children have been learning how to read notation and have performed a variety of pieces as an ensemble.
