Travel, Housing, and Food

In DT this term we have focused on the world around us. We have designed products, thinking carefully about materials, considering links to the historical and social contexts of the time including current transport, thatched roofs during 1966, traditional African snacks and World War Two recipes based on rationing.

Creating Models of Transportation - Reception

Reception were exploring Transport as their topic in Spring 1. In order to make their own 3D model of a type of transport the children were encouraged to choose their favourite mode by listening to stories, discussions in class and learning about the variety of types of transport past and present. They created their own designs, thinking carefully about the features they wanted to include, the materials they might use and equipment they would need. They used their plan to ensure that they had everything ready to create their junk model.

The Ins and Outs of Thatched Roofing - Year 2

Year 2 were challenged to think about how to create a ‘thatched’ roof that was a common feature of houses in London in 1666. They thought about appropriate materials. They came up with the idea of weaving out of paper. They then used a DT template to design and plan their weaved roof and went on to create their 3D models and make a thatched roof out of card /paper.

Snacks - Year 3

Year 3 are studying Africa as their topic this half term. For DT they are exploring and making traditional African snacks. They will discuss how in a developing country like Uganda, people generally don’t eat crisps and chocolate as they can be expensive. Instead, snacks are made from locally produced fruit and vegetables. Year 3 will be planning, designing and making their own African inspired snacks. Delicious!

Food Rationing - Year 6

Year 6 have been studying World War Two this half term. They have learnt about food rationing to support the war effort and ensure everyone had their ‘fair share’. They explored different war recipes that used the available ingredients and were able to follow a recipe for bread pudding. They were surprised it was made from so little ingredients!
